Notes

e-root

E-root data appears to have many duplicate pcaps within their nodes - this is not the case. Where there is the appearance of duplicates these files are actually unique and represent the true number of nodes within that directory. For example, lhr/ contains 4 such distinct nodes. A script was used to re-sort these uploads into the proper node names for further processing.

i-root

The I-root data from Netnod/Autonomica has anonymized source IP addresses due to privacy regulations within the country of that data's origin. UNINETT's data has also been anonymized in the same way.

RIPE-NCC/K.root

For DITL 2017, RIPE NCC uploaded pcap files containing queries arriving at
K-root. During the capture window, 60 K-root servers were active and receiving
queries. The pcap files were rotated every 5 minutes. Most servers sent 600
files each, with the following exceptions:

ns3.nl-ams.k.ripe.net 599
ns1.jp-tyo.k.ripe.net 598
ns2.ir-thr.k.ripe.net 557
ns2.kw-kwi.k.ripe.net 597
ns1.uy-mvd.k.ripe.net 599
ns1.us-ric.k.ripe.net 591
ns1.ca-ott.k.ripe.net 599

This was either because the server was rebooted during the capture window, or
there was a brief network outage resulting in no queries coming to the server
(in which case the pcap file is not rotated after 5 minutes).

SWITCH

This data has been both anonymised as well as contains both queries and answers.

ISC/F.root:

The data does not include two nodes, pao1a and pao1b due to data errors.  Also, the ISC-Cloudfare instances were not captured this year.

ICANN/l.root

Some nodes could not keep up with the collection thus some will look incomplete or are missing files. Otherwise the data is complete.
